use your voice to explain things and use your finger to point on the screen ... by having the person control the mouse and keyboard, then she or he is more in control and can go at a comfortable pacae ... additionally, it builds muscle memory for the person and definitely makes for a better learning experience for him or her ("although maybe not you")
there will be many times you get stuck, especially the first day or two ... just tell the person that you will get Steve or Lynne ... avoid spinning your wheels in wasting time in helping someone ... if you need help or clarity, just ask!
when you get someone over to help the person, then you should go circulate and look for someone else to help ... we want to avoid 2 or 3 summercore staff people bunched up around 1 computer
yes, we pay you at the end of the week ... but this tip ALSO means that you will be asked to do some things that you don't want to do ... I have a good friend at a NYC school who ask each person he hires in the tech department if "you are okay about opening and carrying boxes" ... if someone hesitates or says "no" or says "that is not really my strength" my friend generally thinks that this is a clear indicator that he should not hire this person!
there is usually something to be done ... it may not be obvious so just ask if you can help and you may get some work that you can do and be able to help out ... right at the start of every lunch and at the finish, there is organizational stuff to be done setting up or organizing or cleaning up ... same thing at end of the day when we close up
this is obvious but it does happen with interns at times over the years ... hopefully you will find the content interesting but if not, please do not add to our stress by sitting htere with another intern and chatting
one of the strategies we sometimes use with a person having trouble is to pair that person with an intern as a partner for an extended period of time ... by having you next to the person, letting him or her work the mouse and operate ... but providing help on decisions and the assignment, it is very helpful to the person ... this also helps when we have an odd number of people
