-->I believe Lynne went over this with you ... if not, please ask her
-->TIME is a 4 letter word that has plagued all of us in teaching for over 33 years ... the reality is that you have to BP ("be proactive") and force yourself to spend time if you want anything to happen ... those of you who leave Summercore with a new or renewed commitment to "practice, practice, practice" or meet weekly with someone in your tech dept will make MAJOR progress over the next year ... those of you who are not proactive will find that your computer skills will like my musical skills in a year or two, i.e. pathetic
--> you only save in PDF as REDUNDANCY ... you always save in standard format, e.g. LoveLetter2Larry.doc and then for redundancy and perhaps better viewing for others, you save as LoveLetter2Larry.pdf
--> it is important for you or someone to join a listserv so that you can get the help of hundreds of people who have been down this road before ... click here for my 3 favorite listservs (Steve)
--> hope you have found satisfication with the tech lunch we had and the links I sent you posted here
--> sorry ... I do not have any examples (Steve)
--> in most word processing, triple clicking means to select the current paragraph
--> we hope you have seen some examples by now
--> we hope this will be a booth for the carnival
--> very few schools have incorporated humanware into the mix and that is sad ... typically, there are 1 or 2 or 3 tech people (too often male) running the infrastructure based on number of computers ... some people say for every 50-100 computers, you need one more person ... but the variations are significant ... there are a few schools with 5-8 people as part of the tech team, especially when you include classroom teaching and Web publshing
--> best strategy to buy external USB or Firewire drives for about $100-$125 a piece
--> it is VERY hard to satisfy people who think this way ... someone once said that we need to be thinking about "Fire, Aim, Ready" when it comes to technology instead of "Ready, Aim, Fire" ... I would challenge your board of trustees to find me proof that small classes or blackboards make a difference. The attitude you MUST have with technology is PIONEERING. Your trustees need to be convinced to provide funds to allow 2 or 3 teachers to PIONEER Smartboards and to have ongoing training support (weekly) in support of this, not one hour one time. (Steve)

--> click here or here for a picture ... click here to read about it on Wikipedia or click here for a review ... here is a posting from a tech director on a listserv ... I've been playing around with one (Eee PC 900) and so far, the application software set is quite good for the Linux version. Timing is better now that the Eee PC 901 is coming out soon. That's supposed to have a much longer battery life. For my hands, I'd like to have a slightly larger keyboard but I think it's hard to beat for mobility. K-1? The Eee PC could be the sweet spot...

A new Michael Wesch talk, just posted TODAY ... click here ... The description from Wesch's blog: Presentation: A Portal to Media Literacy Jul 10th, 2008 by Prof Wesch Presented at the University of Manitoba on June 17th 2008.
Kind words about this presentation from Stephen's Lighthouse ... I picked this up from the CASL discussion list in Canada. It deserves wider distribution ... "Many of you have probably seen Kansas SU prof Michael Wesch's thought-provoking video, "A Vision of Students Today." (click here)
Recently Dr. Wesch spoke at the University of Manitoba where he explained the the basis of this video in a talk entitled, "Michael Wesch and the Future of Education." I found it fascinating! He describes how he so naturally incorporates emerging technologies into his courses from the smallest seminar type class to the largest lecture theatre filled class. More importantly he not only talks about the technologies but how he encourages extraordinary participation and collaboration from his students by engaging them in meaningful learning activities. Although the video is 66 minutes long ... pour a coffee, iced tea or glass of wine and enjoy this dynamic presentation from a master teacher." ... click here ... Dubbed "the explainer" by popular geek publication Wired because of his viral YouTube video that summarizes Web 2.0 in under five minutes, cultural anthropologist Michael Wesch brought his Web 2.0 wisdom to the University of Manitoba on June 17 (see video above). During his presentation, the Kansas State University professor breaks down his attempts to integrate Facebook, Netvibes, Diigo, Google Apps, Jott, Twitter, and other emerging technologies to create an education portal of the future. "It's basically an ongoing experiment to create a portal for me and my students to work online," he explains. "We tried every social media application you can think of. Some worked, some didn't."
