- Does this class offer component points or teacher re-certifcation points? Susi
===> Sorry, Susi ... we have no way of doing this and actually explored a connection with a Massachusetts college back in the 80s ... we will issue you a certificate on Friday, however, and sometimes you may be able to use this to your advantage depending on the organization ... additionally, we will be glad in the future to send you any support letters or documentation of what you accomplished in the 35 hours of these 5 day ... Steve Mon 7/25
- What are some options regarding putting month, date, year in the file name? Bill
===> While you may not need to worry about this, Bill, if you are on a Mac and remain on a Mac, it makes sense to use a system that will cause no problems if you ever work on a PC ... my suggestion is to use 6 digits ("6 bytes") such as 120756 or 052441 for being part of the file names, avoiding the / symbol and the . symbol which are sometimes considered unacceptable by certain operating systems ... also remember that the computer maintain a "date of creation" and "date of last modification" for all files which will be accurate as long as the system clock on your computer is accurate
- What can you tell me about hand-held computers? Our administrator is interested in purchasing a class set. Strengths and weaknesses? Mims
===> Several resources exist, Mims, to get more information ... one is the ISED listserv for which you can join and find more info by clicking on the LISTSERVS link on www.summercore.com ... another might be www.laptopsforlearning.com where Fred Bartels from Rye Country Day School in CT maintains the Web site and updates frequently ... I would raise the "big picture question" of your administrator ... is this being done because several teachers in this grade level are excited about it ... is this being launched in one specific grade level which is easier to deal with or in multiple grades? is training being provided on a JBC ("just because") rather than JIT ("just in time basis")? is this being done rather than a set of laptops for money or educational reasons? Steve
- What is a Powerbook? Mims
===> The white ibooks you see in the lab are called IBooks ... the silver ones have slightly
different features and are call Powerbooks ... both are made by Apple
- What do you think of WebCT? Alex
===>Like www.blackboard.com, Web CT is interesting but you need to create a culture within the school of teachers who use it and
support other teachers. This generally starts best with a core group of pioneers working the first year. Technology
projects like this are based on "humanware" issues and a school must commit to the nurturing and support of a
small group of teachers who pioneer a major endeaovor like this the first year and make sure they do it well!

Here come the judges ...
Colleen and Dianne from the Boston Home
First a note from Colleen Thursday at 1:48 pm
dear Steve,
I received your e-mail this morning and hope that everything is going
swimmingly (not to use an ocean's image) ... oceans and flowers are in reach
for me and I
hope that I can judge the pictures without seeming too much of a
hard-bucket. CP
Secondly, the note from Dianne "written" using Dragon Dictate via a microphone connected to
her e-mail system ....
Dianne on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 3:30 PM -0500 wrote:
Hello Steve and crew in sunny Florida.
With the health of our wonderful volunteer whose name is, Vishnu Karaya,
we have been able before 2:30 to look at and judge all the pictures from
this year's Summercore pictures.
Honorable Mention ... I liked both the one from Ed and Mims. I believe
they did the girl waving from the sailboat with the flower on the sail and
how her hair was blowing all over from the wind.
Click here ... Mims and Ed
I also very much like the one from Kathie and Malcolm. I liked the
sunsetting and the beach chairs with the umbrella -- but I think they
should be facing the sunset. They are in the West Coast so the sun is
setting.
Click here ... Kathie and Malcolm
Third place goes to Timon the great and Fearless Fred for the marvelous beach scene
with the sailboat in the background in the umbrella and towel on the
beach. Wish I were there enjoying the waves.
Click here ... Timon and Fred
Second place goes to the beautiful sunset and beach scene number two goes to Susi and
Debbie. However, we could ditch the shark. The sailboat in the
background is nice.
Click here ... Susi and Debbie
First place ... Hands down for use of color and pleasure to look at goes to Bert and
Dan.
Click here ... Bert and Dan
-- from Colleen
and
Dianne --
p.s. as always everyone is to be commended for all their efforts. The cool
green colors were nice in one of the pictures -- but I don't picture Tampa
as been particularly green having lived there in the summertime.
Some company just came in the form of two little girls and one picture
they liked was the one by Lucy, Bruce and Pat.
Click here ... Bruce, Pat, and Lucy
However their number one
favorite was the very same one that Colleen and I chose by Bert and Dan! Both old and
young agreed. Will wonders never cease?!
Thank you Steve for very enjoyable afternoon judging pictures and enjoying
the break and not very hot day for change. The weather broke last night
with a cold front coming through and now the weather is beautiful in the
70s. Be jealous!
Here is the note from Colleen that I did not receive until much later Friday PM
Dear Steve,
As usual, I'm behind the 8-Ball when it comes to being prepared -- I have
an excuse this time -- my wheelchair broke down and I couldn't get out of
bed yesterday until the afternoon -- one thing that I can say is that when
it breaks (although hardly ever) it does a darn good job of it! CP
1. Bert & Dan(or Pam) this picture was a delightful use of color and
feelings for the ocean and ground cover -- I even asked Dianne whether it
was cranberries that I saw in the ground-cover, and she quietly told me
that cranberries don't grow in Florida. And I figured that she would know
since she lived there and I didn't.
2. Susi and Debbie The twilight in this picture is fantastic and shows
good use of a computer skill. What I don't know how I feel about sharks
the size of a Buick lurking in the water and palm trees which have a
rather strange kind of fruit lying underneath.
3. Timon-the great and fearless Fred
What's up with you guys? Nothing like pumping one's own self-image up to
assure the best possible return! In fact, your teamwork sounded like some
ancient Mongolian duo -- the picture was nice, however.
4. (I can't read a name on this picture)
it is a happy kind of a picture with the person in the boat waving and
riding in a boat that seems to be held together by gravity and heavy
material -- great sailing!
