Adam Lesser: the CPU chip

The Intel 8080 was invented in 1974 and was an 8-bit chip. That means 8 bit's of data can be transfered and held in there RAM at a time. Before The intel 8080 some chips were 4-bit chips making them slower. Now we have 32-bit chips and even faster, part of which make the CPU faster. Another issue is clock speed. There are many others, a lot less significant. Ten interesting facts about the microprocessor, the CPU Chip

  1. A CPU is usually no more than .02 inches thick.
  2. A CPU is usually no more than .2 inches wide.
  3. Microprocessors come as 4-bit 8-bit 16-bit 32-bit.
  4. Can you guess the next ?-bit processor? Send e-mail to Adam_Lesser@noblesnet.org if you want the answer!
  5. A microprocessor may have as many as several hundred thousand elements on a single chip.
  6. A chip is actually layers of silicon formed in special ways to allow electricty through parts that have small strips of metal in them.
  7. Microprocessors started to rellay be use by many home computers in the 70's and 80's.
  8. The reason for today's computers being so small is because of minaturezation tech nology and advances in semiconductor technology.
  9. A microprocessor has both RAM and ROM inside it.
  10. The microprocessor in this computer is probably inexpensive to make and buy, it is all the other components of the computer you are really paying for.

Brett Wood: the calculator

The calculator was invented in 1787 by an inventor who was truly very intelligent. His name was George Barnard Grant. He constructed this marvelous invention in Philadelphia. The one he built was extremely large because it was not a known fact how to store that much information in a smaller calculator. After that he continously built smaller and smaller calculators. He could not acheive the excellence of the ones we have today. I acquired this information from a book in the computer lab called The Making of the Micro.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz developed a very complex calculator. In 1679 he constructed a calculator that was faster and more efficient. Leibniz decided that the problem with previous ill constructed calculators was their weaknesses in multiplication and division. He knew a good calculator that would sell would take a long time to build. He solved the multiplication and division problem by making a new kind of multiplier wheel. This stepped wheel made the important advance of making multiplication a distinct operation. Later another inventor named George Barnard Grant followed up on Leibniz's invention and made improvements.

10 Interesting Facts About the Calculator

  1. Right now one of the leading manufactures of high quality calculators is Casio!
  2. The first decent calculator was constructed in 1679!

Meg Curley: the CD Player

The Compact Disk was invented in 1982 in Japan. The Japanese introduced it to Europe that same year and in 1983 it was introduced in America. A group of scientists worked together to make the c.d. which is a circular disk that stores coded information . The C.D. itself is only 2.5 inches across. (6.4 cm) Although the audio C.D was the first commercially succesful C.D., when most of us think of C.D.'s often we relate them to "Dave Mathews Band" or "The Crannberries". The way a C.D. works in a C.D. player is that when a c.d. is spinning a laser beam shines to the pit of the reflecter. The beam bounces of the aluminum coating and sends a mesage to a loud speaker or headphones to play! I hope that you have learned something about the c.d. -meg curley Info.- World book Encyclopedia, volume 4, Ci-Cz TOP TEN ON THE COMPACT DISK

Nick Chu: the submarine

The first Submersible vessel was invented by Cornellis Drebbel, court engineer to King James the first, of England, on the Thames river in 1620. It submerged by letting water into it's hollow hull, and moved using oars sealed by airtight gaskets. To surface, it pumped all the water out. The first mechanically propelled submarine was the TURTLE, a wooden sub invented by David Bushnell in America. It used hand and foot cranked prpellers, and was first used in 1776. It had an explosive charge that, in theary, could be attatched to the hull of an enemy ship using a detatchable auger. The first Nuclear powered submarine was invented in 1954 by the U.S. Navy. Called the Nautilus, it resembled a conventional sub, but it had much greater range, making it a formidable weapon. * NOTE: ALL INFORMATION FROM "THE NEW GROLIER MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA", RELEASE 6 These are ten interesting facts about the Submarine.

  1. The first war submarines were used in the Civil War.
  2. Nuclear Subs are capable of traveling much longer distances without refueling than engine powered subs.
