A modem allows your computer communicate using a phone line. A modem can be either the size of a small box or it can be a narrow board that fits inside your computer. MOdulator DEModulator is an acronym for the word modem. A phone line connects the modem to a phone jack in the wall. With a modem you can sign on to internet services such as,AOL,NoblesNet,Compuserve etc....

The hard disk drive is the most important drive in the computer. A hard disk is about the size of a shoebox. A hard disk is a plastic circular disk enclosed in a dust free environment. You do not take a hard disk out of your computer, it always stays inside the computer. You can both move things on to and off of tthe hard disk drive.

There are many different types of printers. There are Dot-matrix,daisy wheel, laser, and inkjet printers. Nowadays Daisy Wheel printers are practically extinct! Laser printers are the best type of printer. For prices, they can range anywhere from $500-$8,000. The average range of an inkjet printer is about $300-$800. Older types of printers used tractor feed to feed the paper into the machine, but newer computers have a friction feed system that is similar to an electric typewriter. Parallel printers need a parallel interface and serial printers need a serial interface.

ASCII is the most common coding system relating binary numbers to English symbols. Each letter in the alphabet has its own code number in the ASCII system. The codes are like this A=65,B=66,C=67 etc........ ASCII stands for the words American Standard Coding Informmation Interghange

The monitor's official name is the Cathode Ray Tube, the same as old televisions..Moniters can be color, green or amber. Moniters have varying amounts of resolution. Resolution is a rectangle of pixels. A pixel is one dot on the screen. It is common to buy a green screen or a color screen depending on how you are going to use your computer.
