Summercore Alum "Bob Irving" -- irvingb AT e-lcds.org -- on February 26, 2008 answers questions:
when did you do this? 2006-07 school year
how many days? about a dozen
how many kids? what grade? 6th grade computers, teams of 4 students per computer
where did you do the build?
we did the build in the MS computer lab
how many computers were built?
we built 7 computers. 2 were sold at our annual charity auction, and the other 5 went into offices in the school who were scheduled for upgrades.
were you glad you did it?
I am very glad I did it. Students loved the project, and many gained confidence that they could "do computers".
how stressful?
Not really that stressful. Perhaps the greatest stress was when students forgot to use their anti-static wriststraps, since I made such a huge deal about static electricity and computers. The other "scary" moment was seating the processor, since that required very careful eye-hand coordination.
did it get positive reactions from others?
Absolutely! Parents, teachers, visitors, administration were very impressed that 6th graders could do this.
