Sunday 11/5/06 planning
... I will be walking the NYC marathon route which starts at the Verrazano
bridge to raise money for my Boston Home friends with multiple sclerosis ... over the years,
we at Chapin have created numerous projects in the LS and MS and via video-conferencing for
this organization ... about 5-10 girls in Class 6 have traveled with me each of the last 4 years
once a year in June to visit the Boston Home (http://www.thebostonhome.org/) located in
Dorchester MA ... if you would like to make a pledge of $100 (gold) or $10 (silver) or
$1 (bronze) or $19.18 ("curse is reversed") to this wonderful cause please send to
marathon@chapin.edu ... no money yet, since I will be wearing a Red Sox shirt and
may not survive ;-)
Sunday morning 11/5/06 5am
... I am all set and hope I dressed right ... one friend said to wear lots of
layers and so I took her advice ... another friend said "I know you're a diehard, but
maybe you should reconsider the Red Sox
shirt!" and so I decided to wear a red shirt but not a Red Sox shirt ... I will however carry a Red Sox hat
and red sock that I have but I can discreetly put them in my pocket if need be ... I still remember
the story of a colleague at Chapin whose husband wore a Red Sox hat to Yankee stadium and
someone came up to him and punched him in the face ... oh well, I think I am ready ... I have my music
on my cell phone and the entire audio of
Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner which my daughter gave to me ... I also
ripped out 100 pages from the required Mohonk book (A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink) that I hope to read and throw
each page away as I finished it ... Steve
highlights of the journey?
I left my apartment at 5am and arrived exactly at 5:33 at the Verrazano Bridge ... the cab ride was $33 (I am not making this up) ...

... click here for Evan from the Dept of Transportation who put me up
in the bucket truck
... click here for short video early morning in Brooklyn
with quote from Louis Pasteur that "fortune favors the ???"
... at 7:35 am while waiting for Shana, I read in the Daniel Pink book that "metaphor
is the lifeblood of all art" by choreographer Twyla Thorpe ... "we need to boost our MQ (metaphor quotient) because in the creative process
MQ is as valuable as IQ ... page 139 ("everything you create is a representation
of something else; in this sense, everything you create is enriched by metaphor")
... at 8:02 am I met Shana Negin (former Chapin computer teacher) in Brooklyn and she walked a mile me and wished her former students well
... at 9:13 am I crossed the river on the Williamsburg Bridge since last year they would not let me know over the 59th Street bridge (in need of aspirins)
... at 9:19 am I was on Clinton Street and Houston Street heading to Grand Central to get the Boston Globe
... click here for short video back in Manhattan on First Avenue
... I got back to 90th street apartment at 11:18, so total time walking was 5.75 hours
... I managed to read over 60 pages of the Daniel Pink book and it worked out really well ... I would throw each page away
in a garbage can as I read it aloud ... this may turn out to be the most successful reading
style that I use over the next 10 years ... since I am not a good reader, this method gave me
tremendous satisfaction as long as no one was near me ... I could read each page front and back
and then look for the next garbage can ... I believe I will use this method again and again since sitting
in a room and reading a book is NEVER a favorite activity ;-)
