The 1996 Olympics will be a fabulous experience for many amateur athletes in the true sense of the spirit of human competition. However I predict that the over riding major effect of this Olympiad will be its economic impact. Coco-Cola alone is spending 56 million dollars in the USA for advertising. The Stock Market will probably rebound before the election as a consequence of the influx of economic confidence.

Anne Sheehy, Mt Alvernia Academy MA

I believe the Chinese Women Swim Team and their suspected use of drugs to enhance performance will be news worthy. I believe Carl Lewis will get a lot of press concerning his 5th Olympics and his rivalry with new track star Michael Johnson. Something always big comes along with Women Gymnastics.

Carol Dallam, Pembroke Hill School MO

My prediction for the 1996 Summer Olympics is that the women's¹ basketball team will Go For The Gold! Ruthie Bolton from Auburn University is one of the best guards in the game. She was named the 1991 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year. We have a wonderful basketball team, and I expect the best from them!

Debra Parkhurst, Shore Country Day School, MA

Interestingly, the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics will become the dominating news story as the festivities begin in Atlanta. It appears that the choice of Michael Jackson singing ³We are the World² was ill conceived. In an attempt to provide the appropriate level of continuous wind which Michael requires to maintain the billowing appearance of his garments as he performs, Olympic organizers overlooked the dire consequences of placing the portable wind generators too close to the Soviet Republic's gymnastic team. An unfortunate public spectacle and international debacle ensued as three of that team¹s top contenders were sucked into the large machines. Michael¹s publicist has no comment.

Diana Reeves, Gordon School RI

Michael Johnson will be the primary story as he will actually deliver on his attempt to win both the 200m and 400m. He gets both golds in this historic and unprecedented double, setting one new world record in the process. Other stories will be the weather(very hot and humid), women¹s gymnasts winning the team silver, men¹s hoops winning the gold and actually being challenged in one game(less than 20 point margin of victory), and women¹s hoops(or should I say Swoopes) also winning the gold in a much more competitive field. Janet Evans wins a relay medal, Jenny Thompson an individual bronze, Carl Lewis a bronze in the long jump at best.

Fred Hollister, Noble & Greenough School

Atlanta is expecting the hottest weather of the summer during the 1996 Olympics. Sprinklers are set up all over town for the visitors to use to cool off. Red Cross stations are fully equipped to handle the health problems associated with the heat. I predict a cold front will come in, and the weather will be unusually cool and no one will have a sweater with them. The stores will make a fortune in selling sweaters.

Ginger Thrift, St. John's Episcopal School FL

I have been completely oblivious to the onset of the Olympics and the various issues, athletes, teams, politics, etc that might make history during this Olympiad. However, I do know someone who is a complete nut case who will be attending the Olympics with another nut case. The most memorable event will be seeing Jez and Anita in full costume of huge, floppy U.S. flag hats, shiny silver jackets, and crazy glasses. Oh yes, and Elvis will be with them!

Bill Hutchinson, Noble & Greenough School

At the 100th anniversary of the Olympics, my prediction is that there will be a lot of press attention given to the sports which have been around for the entire 100 years and I hope there will be reason to give a lot of attention to our latest dream team.

Judith Geller, Dalton School NY

I predict for the 1996 Olympic Games the women athletes will out shine and out metal the men. I also predict that the gay rights issue will be raised continuously throughout the Games.

Kathy Williams, Pembroke Hill School KS

I predict that Dominique Moceanu will win a gold medal for the Women¹s U.S. Olympic Team. She is 14 years old and last year became the youngest U.S. National champion ever. She qualifies for the Olympics because she turns 15 this year, ( female gymnasts must turn 15 during the same year as the Olympics). She has been compared to her friend and legendary gymnast, Nadia Comaneci.

Louise Burbank, Gordon School RI

Hear ye! Hear ye! Listen now so you will know and be prepared for the big news of the 1996 summer Olympics. There will be a major hurricane warning named Henry just prior to the Olympics. Ticket holders will panic and try to cancel their tickets. Renters will fret over lost money and resign themselves to watching the Olympics on the TV. Atlantans who were planning to make their big fortunes will hand their heads in defeat. But alas! The meteorologists are all wrong! The big news is low humidity and picture perfect weather!

Laurie Doll, Flint Hill School VA

Because of the heat and humidity, a long distance runner will collapse and then Olympic officials will wonder why in the world they chose to have the summer Olympics in hot and steamy Atlanta and why in the world they did not include a single athlete on the committee that selected the city for the Olympics.

Liz Shayne, Spence School NY

I predict that Puerto Rico¹s basketball team is going to win the silver medal. Also the weather is going to affect many records and surprise winners are going to emerge especially from the Caribbean and Africa. Last that this Centennial Games are going to be peaceful and productive. Brotherhood will be the best treasure accomplished.

Luis Alberto Gomez, Newark Academy NJ

The highlight of the Centennial Summer Olympics of 1996 will be the effect of the humidity and heat on the performance of the participating athletes. How will this historically humid heat affect them? Who knows! It may be simple adjustments and adaptations, or it may end up in serious consequences for those athletes most severely affected. Let¹s be positive and say that at the 100th celebration of determination and dedication, all will be champions in Atlanta!!

Marilee Tice, Griffen-Spalding Schools, GA

So hot in Atlanta the athletes decide to never leave the fancy Olympic village that was just built. Some went to a fabulous picnic in the new park. Fun time was had by all.

Mary Leary, Governor Dummer Academy, MA

Of the many highlights to occur at the 1996 Summer Olympics, I feel that discovering who carries the torch into the stadium at the Opening Ceremonies will be one of the most anticipated events.

Patricia Birkholz, Flint Hill School VA

I predict that during the 1996 Summer Olympics the heat and humidity will be a debilitating factor for the athletes. The big stories will include injuries caused by these factors.

Pat Emmet, Gordon School RI

The most newsworthy event of the Olympics of 1996 will be the results of the events because of the unusually hot and humid weather in Atlanta. Most athletes are not accustomed to the high temperatures and the humidity. I feel the spectators will also experience problems due to the heat.

Peggy James, Griffin-Spalding Schools GA

I predict that at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, the young gymnast, Dominique Somebody will steal many people's hearts because she is so adorable.

Sandy Bell, St. Mary's Episcopal School, FL

The Americans will dominate the track events just as they generally do. This year, however, they will take more medals than ever before. All the gold , silver, and bronze medals will go to them. No other athlete will make the podium in the Atlanta games in track.

Sebastian Halyard, Rowland Hall UT

I don't have any great insight about what will happen at the Olympics. I do, however, want to point out that for the first time there will be lightweight rowing in the Games. You should know, though, that only two women (as compared with six men) will compete in the lightweight events. Clearly, we still needs lots of change for equity in athletic opportunities for men and women.

Susan Fine, Taipei American School, Taipei, Taiwan

My prediction for the 1196 Olympics is that WEATHER will be one of the most newsworthy events. July and August are historically severe thunderstorm months in the state of Georgia .

Susan Trynoski, Wyoming Seminary PA

I thinkthat the most exciting thing this summer in Atlanta will be women's basketball. I hope for the first time ever on live TV, we will see a female basketball player dunk the ball. Go USA!!!

Susie Ramirez, Flint Hill School VA

My prediction for the coming 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta will be that the security system that has been put in place will cover international terrorism and problems but that they will neglect the simple and immediate issues of child kidnapping or theft. We are spending a lot of time with the security, which I feel is very important especially after Oklahoma, but we should also concern ourselves with our own immediate safety.

Wendy Mcallister, Fessenden School MA
