Debra Parkhurst

Kindergarten teacher - Shore Country Day School - Beverly, MA

Background

I grew up in a very small town where I was either related to or knew everyone in town. I attended public schools with my brothers and sisters and numerous cousins. After graduating from high school, I majored in Early Childhood Education at the University of Florida in Gainsville. I then worked for the Massachusetts State Senate as a legistative assistant for two years before beginning my career as a teacher. I married my husband in 1979, taught for several years, and then opened my own day care center, nursery school and kindergarten. I sold this business to stay home with my children for five years. When my oldest child was ready for kindergarten, I accepted a position at the Shore County Day School. I have been teaching there for seven years, and my children attend Shore with me.

Interests, Activities & Plans

I am interested in curriculum development, technology, parent education, child development, mentoring programs, and professional development. I am continually looking for new and exciting ways to present materials to my students, and I am thrilled to be learning so many new technology skills through my participation in Summercore!

Other Interesting Things

My husband and I recently purchased the home my father built, and I grew up in. We are very busy with landscaping and decorating projects, but we are all enjoing our new home!
